PANTOFUN’S PICK OF THE POPS! Our Top 26 Panto Songs!

on October 11, 2023

At the moment, one of the most googled questions on the internet seems to be “What are the best songs for Pantomime?”

Like many of you, we love reading these and so we thought we’d add our favourites to the mixing pot.  We’ve always tried to think outside of the box (and Sarah does have rather eclectic taste), so here are our top panto songs for a bit of inspiration.  Download our Pantofun Pick of the Pops! playlist on Spotify and get ready to strut your stuff on stage!

DAME SONGS

Lets be honest, absolutely anything goes here, but here are some of our favourites!

  • If It Wasnae for Your Wellies by Billy Connolly.  It fits perfectly in our Elves and the Shoemakers script!
  • U.G.L.Y by Daphne and Celeste.  Who doesn't love a bit of cheerleading!  Absolutely perfect for the Ugly Sisters in Cinderella!
  • When I’m Cleaning Windows by George Formby.  A fabulous song, perfect for non-singers and so easy to adapt!
  • Don’t Cha by the Pussy Cat Dolls.  Great for a bit of seductive dancing as only a Dame knows how!
  • I Am A Cider Drinker! by The Wurzles.  The only song for our Fairy Puff in The Goose Girl!

PRINCIPAL GIRL AND BOY SONGS

We have to admit, we’ve gone rather away from the traditional lovely dovey songs, so see what you make of these!

  • (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear by Elvis.  Perfect for soft and cuddly Snow White and Bramble in Snow White and Rose Red.
  • Go Wild In The Country! by Bow Wow Wow.  A great song for an adventurous couple!  We’ve used it for Rose Red and Gryls the Bearcatcher in Snow White and Rose Red.
  • You’re My Little Chu Chi Face from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.  Sometimes the old ones really are the best!  Makes a great duet for our captured lead characters in The Elves and The Shoemaker!
  • I Want To Hold Your Hand by the Beatles. A great one for a timid principal couple like Prince Theo and Princes May in The Goose Girl.

SONGS FOR THE MODERN PRINCIPAL GIRL

No song suggestions would be complete without recognising that many principal girls are now written as independent young women.  Here's a couple of songs we've previously used for a bit of girl power!

  • Superman by Black Lace.  Who can resist this one?!  Perfect for a forthright girl who wears the trousers!  A good "song" for a non-singer and makes a great audience participation song too!
  • Dear Future Husband by Meghan Trainor.  If you've got a leading lady with a great voice and a bit of attitude then this is a fabulous choice!

BADDIE SONGS

We're going to be a bit contentious here; sometimes we like our villains to be a bit more relatable and misunderstood!  Try these unusual picks;

  • Tiptoe Through The Tulips originally by Nick Lucas.  Who says the evilest of Goblins can’t pull off a number like this?  A perfect match for the despicable Hemlock in Snow White and Rose Red.
  • It Sucks To Be Me from Avenue Q.  Perfect for a villain and his evil sidekick or as a solo with a bit of jiggling.
  • Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran.  Ok, is there any other choice for our loveable Big Bad Wolf in The Three Little Pigs? "Howl Ooo Ooo Ooo"!

GREAT DUETS

Here's a selection of fun duets for a variety of characters.

  • We Built This City (Welly) by Starship.  With a simple amendment it works perfectly in Elves and The Shoemaker.  Add a bit of air guitar and you're onto a winner!
  • You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly by Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty.  There are simply endless options for using this corker!
  • Multiplication by Bobby Darin.  An unusual choice but great for meddling father King Felix in the Goose Girl!

SONGS FOR THE COMEDY DUO

Another area where you take your pick, but the funnier and most obscure the better!

  • Pump Up The Jam by Techtronics. See our suggestion for this one in Elves and the Shoemaker!

  • The Fox (What does the Fox Say?) by Ylvis.  Helen and I have certainly bounced around the stage to this one - a real fun one to perform and get the audience howling (with laughter!)  Expect it to be in our Aladdin script coming soon

SONGS FOR YOUR "HIYA KIDS" CHARACTER

From daft brothers to best friends, here's a few suggestions for the audiences favourite character.

  • Where’s Me Jumper! by the Sultans of Ping F.C.  Too good a song to lose into obscurity forever!  Sarah has been desperate to get this in for a while…. Coming soon in Aladdin!

  • Tubthumping by Chumbawumba.  A perfect song to get the audience on your side!

  • You could also use It Sucks To Be Me from Avenue Q.

COMMUNITY SONGS

  • The Witch Doctor by Kid Drew.  A great participation song particularly if you add some actions!  See our itchy version in Cinderella!

  • The Hokey Cokey.  We’ve given this a makeover as the Oinky Oinky in our Three Little Pigs ... "trump!" - well, they are pigs after all!

CHORUS SONGS

Audiences love a foot tapper!  Here's a couple to make you want to clap and sway along!

  • Cotton Eyed Joe by the Rednex.  A right boot stompin tune!  Perfect in our Goose Girl script!
  • In the Country by Cliff Richard.  One for the mums and Granny's!  A catchy opening song from Snow White and Rose Red.

We could go on and on as there are so many great songs out there to chose from but it's time to stop messing about on Spotify and get back to work!   We hope you've enjoyed PantoFuns Pick of the Pops! - if nothing else it's a great playlist in the car!

    Until next time!
