This week we give you our 6 top tips to Prop Up Your Panto. Props can inject an element of silliness into your panto performance but sourcing and making them can be even more fun! Yes, you can buy so many things ready made online these days but repurposing and reusing is more fun - and of course better for the environment. So get creative and see where your imagination takes you!
Appoint someone to oversee and if possible, collect props for you. Depending on space at your performance venue, this might need to be someone with a large garage, empty spare bedroom and an agreeable spouse…or most likely all three..!
Ask your cast. You’d be amazed at the random items that people put away in a safe place….just in case….oooh, this’ll come in handy one day….(or is that just us?!)
Check what your society already has. Before anyone rushes out to buy a pair of fairy wings….check….chances are you’re already hoarding some somewhere! If it’s possible, try and keep an inventory of what props you have and store them in marked boxes so you can always access them easily.
Think what you can alter, adapt, recycle or make from scratch - for those on a budget, this is obviously the cheapest way. It's amazing how with just the addition of a bit of paint, fabric or (and!) glitter (obviously!) can completely change the look of something that's been around for years!
“Use” your local charity shops. Most of the lovely volunteers are only too happy to look out for and put aside specific items for you. Some things can be quite tricky to find so spread the word around - everyone loves a challenge! You may be able to leave a contact address so you can collect quickly and not be a hindrance, and of course the odd free ticket always helps!
Keep your eyes peeled! Look in the sale isles of supermarkets and local stores…..it’s amazing what random items can be picked up cheaply. The few days after Halloween are brilliant for finding accessories for witch costumes, evil lairs and anything that requires a spider and Easter is great for giant eggs and bunny ears!!
