As one show wraps up and the curtain falls, thoughts quickly turn to the next production. But where do you begin? With so many scripts and websites to explore, choosing can feel overwhelming. To help, we’ve put together our Top Ten No-Nonsense Tips for Picking Your Next Script!
At PantoFun, we believe pantomimes work all year round. Many of our scripts make perfect Easter or summer shows. For many amateur groups, pantos are the best-selling production of the season — so why not run two? Family-friendly options like The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Goose Girl, or The Frog Prince work beautifully whatever the weather.
This is often the big debate. Sarah prefers traditional stories (even lesser-known ones), while Helen loves something fresh or a fun “mash-up.” Both approaches have pros and cons. Audiences — and sometimes the cast — will often guide the choice. We’ve written pantos that bridge the gap, such as Snow White and Rose Red, The Pied Piper of Hamlyn-on-Sea and The Goose Girl. For true classics, try Aladdin, Cinderella or Jack and The Beanstalk.
Shorter pantos are growing in popularity. They need less rehearsal time, are great for children, and still deliver all the magic in a compact format. Our one-hour scripts can be staged with or without an interval. For example, The Three Little Pigs includes a full chorus, while our Frog Prince and Little Miss Muffet scripts are perfect for small casts and performance in schools.
Always think about your cast. Dream scripts are tempting, but if you can’t cast them, they’ll become a headache. Choose something achievable for your members’ skill set. Our scripts are written with flexibility in mind, and we’re always happy to help adapt one if something doesn’t quite fit your group.
Big sets and flying characters are fantastic — but not always realistic. Our scripts are mindful of smaller company constraints and include staging options. Keep in mind: simplifying too much can affect the magic, so plan carefully to balance ambition with practicality.
Most scripts allow minor changes (like local place names), but bigger alterations usually need permission. At PantoFun, we’re happy to help adjust a script — whether that means doubling roles, cutting characters, or even adding new ones (for a small fee).
It’s always worth checking in with nearby societies or theatres. If three groups all stage Jack and the Beanstalk the same year, ticket sales may suffer. Choose something different to maximise audiences, and consider cross-promoting each other’s shows — audiences who enjoy one amateur production are often keen to see another.
Your first read-through should make you laugh and feel inspired. Don’t rely on your cast to breathe life into a dull script — if it doesn’t excite you now, it won’t later. Pick something that sparks joy from the start.
Every society has its traditions — maybe a slop scene, a “he’s behind you” moment, or a big comedy number. If one of our scripts is close but missing your trademark scene, talk to us. We can add it in for you with minimal fuss.
Read through dozens of Aladdins and Cinderellas and still not found the one? Have a unique idea but don’t know where to start? Why not commission us to write a bespoke script just for your group? We’ll create something tailored to your cast and your stage, helping you stand out and make the most of your talents.
At PantoFun, we have plenty of original, family-friendly scripts waiting for you. And the best part? All our preview scripts are FREE to download.
Happy hunting!
